1. (A) Explain the following terms in 2-3 sentences (any five)                10

(i) Body language: Communication through body movements is called body language. Body language is a type of nonverbal communication that relies on body movements (such as gestures, posture, and facial expressions) to convey messages. Body language may be used consciously or unconsciously. It may accompany a verbal message or serve as a substitute for speech.

(ii) Grapevine: Grapevine also known as informal communication. Grapevine arises because of the desire of the people to communicate without following the formal channel of communication. It follows no setlines, nor any definite rules, but spreads like grapevine, in any direction anywhere.

(iii) Marginal listening: Marginal listening also known as selective listening is that in which a listener occasionally raises heads to take some information from the speaker either to please him or he is agreed with the speaker’s views. The main reason of this type of listening is unrelated and uninteresting topics discussed by speaker.

(iv) E-mail Etiquette: Email etiquette is a set of code of conduct that one must follow while sending emails or answering the received emails. Email etiquette mainly depends on whom we are writing email such as business emails, friends, relatives etc.

(v) Silence as a means of communication:  In common term, silence means absence of noise but in communication, it means the absence of speech which is considered to be a very powerful form of communication. People use silence or non communication to express their reluctance, indifference or resentment smacks of ego.

(vi) Dress and grooming: It is form of non-verbal communication. It shows how a person value himself. It is the best way to put effective first impressions on the audience.

(vii) WhatsApp: It is a free messaging application which is owned by facebook. It allows users to send test messages, voice messages, share videos, make voice and video calls. It is also used by businesses in digital marketing.

(viii) Encoding: Encoding means put an idea into words. In this step the communicator organizes his ideas into a series of symbols or words which will be communicated to the intended receiver. Thus the ideas are converted into words or symbols. The words and the symbols should be selected carefully, it should be understandable and most of all it should be suitable for transmission and reception.

(1) Feedback: Feedback indicates the result of communication. It is the key element in the communication and is the only way of judging the effectiveness of communication. It enables the sender to know whether his message has been properly interpreted or not. Systematic use of feedback helps to improve future message. Feedback, like the message could be oral, written or non verbal. It has to be collected from the receiver.

(2) Facebook: Facebook is an American social media and social networking website which is developed by mark zuckerburg and his roommates.  In addition to social networking, it also offers other products like facebook messenger, facebook watch and facebook portal. It also acquires WhatsApp and Instagram.

(3) Medium of communication: Medium of communication also known as channel of communication is the path or way through which information is transmitted throughout the organization. It is the route through which the message flows from the sender to the receiver.

2 Non – Verbal communication: Communication without using words or writings known as non-verbal communication. In other words, non-verbal communication means communication through physical movements and facial expressions. Gestures, posture, eye movements, etc. are examples of non-verbal communication.

3 Jargon: Jargon is a specialized technical language which is understood by a group or profession. Every groups or profession has its own specialised technical terms which are not understandable for others. This is also considered to be a barrier to communication. Example of business jargon is drill down which means to look a problem in details but this term is not understandable to everyone.

4 Self-image: Self-image is the personal view, or mental picture, that we have of ourselves. Self-image is an “internal dictionary” that describes the characteristics of the self, including such things as intelligent, beautiful, ugly, talented, selfish, and kind.

1. Proxemics: Proxemics is concerned about the use of space by groups of people. Different people make use of space around them in different ways. The way a group uses the space assigned determines their respective position and interaction pattern. For example: people seated in front are considered to be bold and are the ones who initiate the conversation. Fixed and semi fixed spaces have important implication in communication.
